Aretha Louise Franklin was born on March 25, 1942, in Memphis, Tennessee. Her father Reverend Clarence La Vaughan “C.L.” Franklin was a Baptist preacher, and her mother Barbara Siggers Franklin was a gospel singer. Aretha was the fourth of five children. Her parents separated when she was six. Four years later, her mother died of a heart attack.
